It was virtually a self-contained world. It is the headquarters of the Dalai Lamas , and has been the home of each of the successive Dalai Lamas. It is a treasure house of traditional Tibetan culture. It is a relic under the state protection, and has been put on the List of the World Cultural Heritage.
We will then visit the Jokhang Temple (大昭寺) in the heart of the old Tibetan part of the town. It was built in the mid-seventh Century. It was founded by Queen Bhrikuti on a site deemed by Queen Wencheng to be the principal geomatic power-place in Tibet. It is at Barkhor Street (八角街市集) that most people fall in love with Lhasa. This is one part of Lhasa that has resisted any invasion of the modern world. The whole circuit is lined with stalls selling everything a Tibetan or visiting tourist could possibly need.

Samye Monastery (桑耶寺) was probably founded during the 770's under the patronage of King Trisong Detsen. The monastery has been damaged and restored many times throughout its long history. The present construction was rebuilt by the 6th Dalai Lama and the living Buddha of Reting monastery.

Yumbulagang (雅魯藏布江) sprouts from a craggy ridge overlooking the patch-work fields of the Yarlung Valley. This is reputed to be the oldest building in Tibet.
Trandruk Monastery is one of the three royal Buddhist temples (along with the Jokhang Monastery and Samye Monastery) of King Trisong Detsen in the 8th century. It has undergone numerous enlargements and reconstructions over the centuries. Most of the Trandruk's valuable images and murals were damaged during the Cultural Revolution and have been replaced with new ones. Trandruk is a significant stop for Tibetan pilgrims.
The burial ground of the Tibetan Kings is situated in Chongye county. These tombs in some ways represent one of the few historical sites in Tibet that give evidence of a pre-Buddhist culture in Tibet. Erosion of the mounds has made some of them difficult to identify. However, this is agreed that there is a group of 10 burial mounds just south of the Chongye river can be seen.

Day 07 | Tsedang-(311km)-Gyantse 江孜 (3,950m) |

The Chinese have a more pragmatic interest in the lake as the potential site of a hydroelectricity generating station. Yamdrok-tso is a dead lake and any water drained from it for generating electricity cannot be replenished.
Continue to Karo La (5,010 metres), site of the highest battle fought between the British and Tibetan in 1904.
