Hakuba village set high in the spectacular Japan Alps. With peaks towering over 3,000 metres, breathtaking scenery and long winters with abundant snowfalls, the transition from a small farming village to a world-class ski resort was almost inevitable. From the first official gathering of skiers who formed the Hosono ski club in 1928, Hakuba was immediately admired by the greatest skiers and alpinists, thus giving birth to the centerpiece of the Hakuba Valley, Happo Ski resort. Visitors continue to flock to the area to experience the high alpine skiing, soothing apre-ski hot springs, great food, fascinating culture, and the unforgettable friendly smiles that have made the Hakuba Valley Japan's premier winter getaway.

As Japan's premier ski region, Hakuba offers more terrain, vertical rise and advanced ski/board slopes than anywhere in Japan. Having hosted the 1998 Winter Olympic Games and numerous FIS World Cup events, Hakuba now has an international reputation as a world-class ski resort. Each year, the Olympic spirit continues in Hakuba, with international ski jumping, alpine ski and snowboarding, cross-country and biathlon competitions and events. This combination of world-class skiing, abundant snowfalls, sunny skies and over ten ski resorts truly makes Hakuba a precious gem among the rugged Japan Alps.

Endless Resorts

The Hakuba Valley is a huge expanse of ski resorts offering an incredible variety of terrain for both skiers and snowboarders. Situated in the heart of of the Japan Alps, the alpine scenery is truly specacular with huge rugged peaks towering above the town of Hakuba below. From one end of the valley to the next, with ten resorts accessing over two hundred runs, Hakuba is the premier valley in Japan. The southern end of the valley, Sun Alpina, incorporates three ski areas:

To the northern end of the valley, Iwatake, Tsugaike, Norikura and Cortina are all impressive resorts that are rated highly among skiers and boarders.

Supreme Skiing

From the complete novice to the expert skier, Hakuba provides some of the best skiing in Japan. Everything from gentle beginner slopes, to steeps, bumps and long groomers, and of course, plenty of fresh powder.

Happo Resort is Hakuba's premier ski mountain, boasting some of the highest snowfalls and longest vertical pitches in all o Japan, while Hakuba 47 and Goryu-Toomi's terrain challenges everyone from first timers to experts. Tsugaike and Iwatake resorts are also well suited to the beginner and intermediate levels, with long cruising trails providing a great opportunity for non-stop skiing. Hakuba's reputation as a serious skiers destination is well balanced across all levels, offering something for everyone.

Activities Galore

Hakuba offers a bounty of alpine activities and adventures for everyone to enjoy. Groomed cross-country courses wind their way through some of the most spectacular scenery in Japan. Ski the Olympic cross-country or the scenic Nordic courses at Minekata and Tsugaike ski rsorts. Experience guided ski/snowboard and snowshoe tours, snow tubing, tobogganing, snow rafting, spring hell-skiing or even hot air balloning that are offered at the various resorts in the valley. For those wanting to have a break from the Alps, enjoy a relaxing hotspring and massage or take in the history and culture of Nagano with tours regularly departing from Hakuba to Matsumoto Castle, Nagano's Zenkoji Temple and the snow monkeys at the famous Jigokudani hot springs.

Hakuba Happo - Site of 1998 Winter Olympic Games

Happo One ski resort is set amongst the spectacular Northern Japan Alps and spreads out along the mountainous ridge leading down from Mt Karamatsu. With over 1,000 verticals meters and a total of 31 lifts, Happo One is one of the largest and most famous ski resorts in Japan.

Accommodation

Hakuba offers an extensive range of accommodation from budget pensions and lodges through to deluxe 5 star hotels, as well as self-contained lodging. Room styles include both Japanese and Western bedding options.

Japanese Style Traditional Japanese style rooms with tatami flooring and futon bedding. Bedding is laid out and packed away by house keeping on a daily basis and slippers are provided to be worn inside the room. Combination of Japanese/Western rooms are also available and popular with families.
Western Style Western style rooms are the most widely available option and will nearly always be single bedding with only few of teh upper end hotels offering double bedding options. Room sizes vary depending on one budget and range from approximately 20 sq. meters through to 50 square meters, with twin, triple and quad.
Self Contained Private self-contained accommodations can also be arranged with a selection of cottages, cabins and apartments.

From Tokyo 東京:

There are 2 options to get to Hakuba by car:

  1. Take the Chuo Expressway to the Okaya J.C.T. and head towards Nagano on the Nagano Expressway. Exit at the Toyoshina Interchange and follow Route 147 & 148 through Omachi and onto Hakuba (4 hours).
  2. Take the Kanetsu Expressway to the Fujioka J.C.T. and head towards Nagano on the Joshinetsu Expressway. Exit at the Nagano Interchange and follow the Hakuba Nagano Olympic Road to Hakuba (4 hours).

From Nagoya 名古屋:

Take the Chuo Expressway to the Okaya J.C.T. and head towards Nagano on the Nagano Expressway. Exit at the Toyoshina Interchange and follow Route 147 & 148 through Omachi and onto Hakuba (3.30 hours).

From Osaka 大阪 or Kyoto 京都:

Take the Meishin Expressway to the Komki J.C.T. head up the Chuo Expressway to the Okaya J.C.T. and head towards Nagano on the Nagano Expressway. Exit at the Toyoshina Interchange and follow Route 147 & 148 through Omachi and onto Hakuba (5.30 hours).

* Please remember to bring chains and make sure your radiator has anti-freeze.

By Chartered Services - Coach or Minivan

From Narita Airport 成田國際機場
Passengers traveling by chartered services depart from Narita airport to Hakuba and travel via the Kanetsu Expressway route (5 hours).

From Osaka 大阪 or Kyoto 京都
Passengers traveling by chartered services depart from your selected hotel in Kyoto or Osaka for Hakuba and travel via he Meshin / Chuo / Nagano Expressway route (5.30-6 hours).
