Winter in Niseko

Niseko in Hokkaido is one of Japan's premier snow resorts. It comprises five ski fields on the one mountain called Mount Annupuri, They are:

  1. 61 ski runs
  2. over 47km of groomed slopes, with longest run of 5,600 metres
  3. 27 chairs lifts and 3 gondolas
  4. elevation 1,200 metres above sea level,
  5. beginner runs - 30%; Intermediate runs - 40%; Advanced runs - 30%
  6. Hours of Operation: 08:30 am - 09:00 pm 7 days a week during ski season (Grand Hirafu only),
  7. Average snow depth: Dec - 100cm; Jan - 300cm; Feb - 385cm; Mar - 420cm.
  8. Average temperatures: Dec -8°C; Jan -10°C; Feb -11°C; Mar -7°C.

Niseko caters for all levels of skiers and boarders. There are legendary tree runs and open powder bowls, many wide, groomed runs and an abundance of powder-laced learning slopes. Accommodation is found either on snow or a short walk or shuttle bus ride to the nearest lift. We offer an extensive selection of accommodation, including traditional family-run pensiones, self-contained luxury apartments and hotels with Japanese and Western style bedding.

Whether it's visiting an onsen for the first time, trying your hand at snowmobiling, enjoying authenic Hokkaido cuisine, or checking out a local sake brewery, you will find adding a day or two to your trip is well worth it.

Visiting Niseko during December, January, or February, be prepared for heavy snowfall. This is best to prepare a good pair of low light goggles, some quality layers to keep yourself warm and a pair of snow boots for getting around the village.

If your preference is for good visibility, midler temperature and panoramic views, you might consider to visit Niseko in late February onwards by when the average snowfall drops off significantly.

There are ski schools offered ski lessons offers English speaking lessons with instructors from Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe. They offer private on-snow beginner lessons. But make sure you book ahead! Lessons can be very popular over peak seasons and classes often fill up well before the season begins.
